Background of the Study
Economic hardship has emerged as a significant stressor impacting the mental health of artisans in Owo. Faced with fluctuating market conditions, limited access to credit, and rising production costs, artisans experience chronic financial strain that affects their overall well-being (Adekunle, 2023). The precarious economic environment exacerbates stress, leading to anxiety, depression, and reduced productivity (Balogun, 2024). Artisans, who often rely on traditional skills and informal networks, are particularly vulnerable to economic shocks that disrupt their livelihoods. This study investigates the multifaceted ways in which economic hardship influences the psychological state of artisans, examining the interplay between financial stress, social support systems, and individual coping mechanisms (Fadare, 2025). By critically analyzing these factors, the research aims to identify effective strategies to alleviate economic-induced psychological distress and improve the mental health of artisans in Owo.
Statement of the Problem
Artisans in Owo face severe economic challenges that impose a heavy psychological toll. Financial instability, reduced income, and limited access to financial resources contribute to chronic stress and mental health issues among these skilled workers. The resulting anxiety and depression adversely affect their productivity and overall quality of life. Despite the critical nature of these challenges, there is insufficient research on the specific psychological impact of economic hardship on artisans. This study seeks to address this gap by exploring the relationship between economic stressors and mental health outcomes in Owo (Adekunle, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:

To assess the economic challenges faced by artisans in Owo.

To evaluate the psychological effects of economic hardship on artisans.

To propose strategies for mitigating the mental health impacts of financial stress.

Research Questions:

What are the main economic challenges affecting artisans in Owo?

How does economic hardship impact their psychological well-being?

What interventions can alleviate the psychological toll of economic stress?
Research Hypotheses:

Economic hardship significantly increases psychological distress among artisans.

Financial instability correlates with higher rates of anxiety and depression.

Targeted financial support and mental health interventions can improve well-being.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the psychological toll of economic hardship on artisans, providing critical insights for developing support mechanisms and policy interventions. The findings will benefit artisans, policymakers, and mental health practitioners by guiding effective strategies to alleviate economic-induced stress in Owo (Balogun, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to exploring the economic challenges and their psychological effects on artisans in Owo Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on economic and mental health aspects.
Definitions of Terms:

Economic Hardship: Financial difficulties and instability that negatively impact livelihoods.

Artisans: Skilled workers engaged in traditional crafts and trades.

Psychological Toll: The mental and emotional strain resulting from external stressors.
